Recently, I had a problem with My PC Not Responding.

While looking for the cause of this and that, the problem was solved by removing and reinstalling the SSD, suspecting that the SSD was out of contact with my animal sense.

I’d like to talk about a few pictures and teardown stories of my laptop, MSI GP63 Leopard 8RE, which I took while disassembling.

Hardware Specifications

Before we take it apart, let’s take a quick look at the specifications of the MSI GP63 Leopard 8RE.

The most satisfying thing about using it is scalability.

It was nice to have one additional M.2 SSD and one 2.5 inch HDD slot each, and two expandable HDMI and mini-DP ports.

I am using two M.2 SSDs, one 2.5-inch hard, and two 8GB memory in a dual-channel configuration.

Open the bottom plate

First of all, you need a driver, guitar peak, or unused card as a preparation.

Place a cloth or towel on top of the laptop to prevent damage to the top of the laptop, and place the laptop upside down.

If it’s manufactured in September 2018, I used a lot of time, right?

Shall we loosen the screws?

There are 11 screws in total. Release them all.

The second screw from the bottom right wins the seal sticker for the warranty.

It’s been a long time, so the AS period is over now.

When I bought it before, I drastically pierced it for SSD and memory upgrade. Typically, when purchasing, asking the dealer for an upgrade together will not damage the warranty.

However, it is more expensive than buying memory or SSD alone, so it is a part that needs to be considered.

Shall we open the bottom?

Insert the card from the bottom right and turn it open. Open it in the order of the yellow orientation.

Afterwards, it opens the back panel by pushing it in the red direction, and the reason it opens from left to right is because the right audio terminal is inserted into the casing groove.

The bottom is open – Disconnecting the Battery

The CPU and GPU are covered with heat pipes, and you can see HDD, memory, and NVME SSD slots.

If you are going to disassemble or replace the parts, first disassemble the battery.

There is a risk of failure due to an electrical short.

GPU

The GPU is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, and the graphics memory is 6GB of GDDR5. The TDP is 80 W.

If we compromise the options properly, I think it’s not too much for games.

CPU

The CPU is the Intel 8th Generation Core i7-8750H.

If you look at the CPU, even though it’s the 8th generation, it seems to be somewhere between the Intel 10th generation i5 and the 11th generation i5. For your information, the H series is Intel’s gaming processor for laptops.

I bought it in 2018 and have been using it for about 4 years, but I don’t enjoy hard games, so I’d like to say that I’m still active.

2.5-inch HDD

Technically, the MSI GP63 Leopard 8RE offers one 2.5-inch SATA interface slot.

I have a 1TB HDD disk, but You can also mount an 2.5-inch SSD or M.2 SSD via converter.

Memory, M.2 SSD slots

M.2 SSD Slots

The MSI GP63 Leopard 8RE offers two SSD slots in the M.2 specification, as shown below.

  • M.2 SSD slot (NVMe PCIe Gen3) : Right Vertical Slot
  • M.2 SSD Combo (NVMe PCIe Gen3 / SATA ) : Bottom Horizontal Slot

The bottom horizontal slot is a combo slot that supports both NVMe and SATA methods. However, I tried to install Western Digital (WD) M.2 NVMe 256GB, but it was not recognized. There seems to be a compatibility issue.

So, if you are planning to install an additional M.2 NVMe SSD, we recommend that you install it in the right vertical slot.

M.2 means the form factor of the mounting slot.
There are NVMe and SATA methods in the M.2 form factor, and NVMe is more than 5 times faster than SATA.

The slot that I had the problem of Not Responding to my PC due to contact problems was also the bottom horizontal slot. It is equipped with the bundled M.2 SATA SSD 128GB.

Memory

Two memory slots (Max 32GB) for DDR4-2400 (PC4-19200) or DDR4-2666 (PC4-21300) are available.

I remember that one 8GB of DDR4-2666 was installed as a bundle. I have an additional 8GB memory of the same clock and am using it in a 16GB configuration.

It is advantageous in performance because dual channels are formed by installing two memory of the same clock and capacity.

You can find out the exact details by checking the CPU-Z.
